Jean Sizing

The sizing of jeans is a whole different ball game to shoes.  Most jeans are based on measurements in inches, and you can tell a lot from this which helps get a great fit in a jean.

As a rough comparison for GUESS jeans, here are their size equivalents:

GUESS Australia
24/32 6
25/32 7
26/32 8
27/34 9
28/34 10
29/34 11
30/34 12
31/34 13
32/34 14

There are three types of measurements that will help you in your decision making:

  • waist measurement
  • inseam measurement
  • rise

Let's look at the following example:

size 26/32, with a 8" rise

This is a typical jean size/description.  Let's dissect:

26 represents the waist measurement in inches.  This is the measurement of where the waistband will sit.  So a low rise jean will sit at a different place to a high rise jean.  Measure accordingly

32 represents the inseam measurement in inches.  This is the length of your body from your crotch to your ankle.  Stand up straight and measure away.  Being longer is always better, as you can wear the jeans with heels, or get them taken up.  You never want to be adding denim to the end of your jeans .... !

8" rise Take a pair of jeans that you like.  Lay them on a flat surface.  Measure from the top of the waistband above the zip to the bottom of the crotch seam.  This is the rise measured in inches.  A low rise measures 8" - 9".  Mid rise is about 9.5" - 10".  A jean that sits at the waist will have a 10-11" rise.

And always read the description that the manufacturers have provided!
